for further information.
Modern immobiliser systems using a transponder chip within the key started to be introduced into vehicles in 1994. On the 1st October 1998 it became mandatory for all new vehicles sold in the UK to have a factory fitted immobiliser system. These systems are automatic, meaning the owner does not have to remember to activate it.
A key without a programmed transponder chip will not start the vehicle.
